Many work permit holders become eligible for provincial health coverage — in Ontario, for example, people with a work permit for full-time work with an Ontario employer for at least six months can qualify for OHIP. But there can be gaps: before coverage starts, in provinces with a waiting period, between permits, or for family members who don't qualify. Private visitor-style insurance covers emergencies during those gaps.
When work permit holders need private cover
- Arrival until the provincial plan begins
- Provinces with a waiting period (up to about three months in some)
- Permits shorter than the province's minimum
- Gaps between an expiring permit and a new one
- Spouses or children who don't yet qualify
Spouses and children
Eligibility for family members depends on the province and their own status. If they don't qualify yet, a family plan can cover them together.
Employer benefits aren't the same thing
Workplace health benefits usually top up provincial coverage (drugs, dental, vision). They rarely replace hospital and doctor coverage when you don't have a provincial card. Check before relying on them.
What to do
- Apply for the provincial health card as soon as you're eligible.
- Buy private cover from arrival (or permit gap) until the card is active.
- Ask about refunds for unused days if the card arrives early.
