New permanent residents, work-permit holders and returning Canadians may have to wait before provincial health coverage starts. Waiting periods vary by province — Ontario currently has none for eligible new residents, while some other provinces still have one. A short-term private plan covers emergencies until your health card is active.
Who it's for
- New permanent residents
- Work-permit holders waiting for provincial coverage
- Canadians moving back after living abroad
- Anyone moving between provinces during a waiting period
How to plan your cover
- Apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive.
- Check the waiting period with your province.
- Buy private cover starting on your arrival date, for the length of the waiting period.
- Cancel any unused days once your card is active (refund rules apply).
