Visitors to Canada insurance pays for emergency medical care — hospital, doctors, tests, prescriptions and ambulance — for people not covered by a provincial health plan. You can buy from a few days up to one year, with coverage from about $10,000 to $300,000+. Buy before arrival to avoid waiting periods for illness.
Who needs visitor insurance?
- Parents and relatives visiting on a regular visitor visa or eTA
- Tourists and business visitors
- Canadians returning home who have lost provincial coverage
- New immigrants waiting for a provincial health card (see new immigrant cover)
- International students without a school plan (see student insurance)
Health care in Canada is expensive for anyone without a provincial plan — an emergency hospital stay can cost several thousand dollars per day. Visitor insurance turns that risk into a small, predictable premium.

When to buy
Buy before the visitor arrives. If coverage starts after arrival, most insurers apply a waiting period — often 48 hours for injuries and up to 7–8 days for illness — and won't cover sickness that starts during that time.
Pre-existing conditions
Insurers may cover a pre-existing condition if it has been stable for a set period before the policy starts. There are many variables — age, medication changes and the stability period — so talk to Pankaj before you buy. How stability periods work →
