Many Super Visa and visitor plans cover short side trips outside Canada — including the U.S. — as long as most of the policy period is spent in Canada and the trip isn't to the home country. Medical costs in the home country are not covered. Some insurers limit the number of days or exclude U.S. care for certain conditions, so check before booking.
Typical side-trip rules
- The policy must start in Canada, and most of the coverage period must be spent in Canada.
- Trips to the home country aren't covered while there.
- Some plans cap side trips in days or as a percentage of the policy period.
- U.S. care can be very expensive — some plans have separate limits or exclude stable pre-existing conditions there.
Going home mid-policy
If parents go home for a few months and come back, coverage generally doesn't apply while they're away. Depending on the insurer you may be able to pause or partly refund the policy — ask before travelling, not after.
Before booking a trip
- Tell Pankaj the destination and dates.
- Check the side-trip limit and any U.S. restrictions in the wording.
- Carry the policy card and assistance number.
- Keep travel receipts as proof of dates.
